Notes

With the “warm weather” wheel/tire set, we are running wheels off a later model (somewhere between 2003 and 2006) Wrangler with the Rubicon trim. We bought these used through a Facebook Marketplace ad. This got me thinking about the functional offroad differences between our 1997 Wrangler Sport and the Rubicon trim options that were not available until 2003. The main differences appear to be the axles (upgraded Dana 44 with lockers) and the transfer case (upgraded to NP241OR), as well as some differences in the suspension, wheels, etc. The only thing I believe that hasn’t ben upgraded to the Rubicon trim level equivalent or better on our ’97 Sport is the transfer case. We still have the NP231, which is less robust and isn’t geared as low as the NP241OR. This is just something for us to consider if we ever “need” to (or want to) upgrade the transfer case due to failure or for the lower gearing. However, the NP231 is regarded as a good transfer case, we haven’t had any issues with it, and I have been happy with the overall balance of our gearing for paved road and offroad/wheeling use. All that said, we keep an eye out for good deals on parts that we may eventually replace.

TODO list:

  • Inspect/resolve intermittent P0740 MIL
  • Monitor P0107 MIL for potential PCM update or replacement
  • Cycle suspension to inspect potential RE1600 track bar hitting Dana 44 diff cover
  • Inspect wheel spacers – remove, inspect, re-install with loctite (this will mainly be to verify that they are installed at the correct torque)
  • Change engine oil/filter (I had this done in a shop in September 2024, but plan to do it again myself as part of a more thorough cleaning/flush of the engine oil)
  • Inspect/replace 1″ body lifts (somebody ibn a forum post said the body lift components on our Jeep are prone to failure – they look newer than the documentation I have and look OK to me, so I might get a second opinion from a local 4×4 shop)
  • Replace fuel injector wires and harnesses (pigtails) – the wire insulation is starting to crack and fall apart
  • Repair dome light operation (wiring to the hard top is not tied in correctly, but I don’t know if this is related – I suspect this is wired via some route that follows the aftermarket roll cage)
  • Inspect/repair operation of rear window defrost system
  • Inspect/repair operation of rear window wiper system
  • Document toolkit contents, first-aid-kit, emergency gear, etc. (wheeling cargo checklist)
  • Fix speedometer/odometer (it’s wasn’t accurate on 35s but seems OK on 33s)
  • Remove rust and/or apply rust inhibitor anywhere there is rust
  • Fix paint issues – chips, scratches, etc.
  • Test/install soft top (OEM soft top with frame purchased used in November 2024, came off another ’97 Wrangler)
  • Replace power steering pressure hose (per PBI recommendation)
  • Replace power steering return hose (per PBI recommendation)
  • Inspect air conditioning system (never used/tested since it hasn’t been needed yet)
  • Flush power steering fluid
  • Inspect serpentine belt
  • Rotate tires at 211,000 miles or sooner
  • Install rock lights (already purchased)
  • Inspect/resolve issue with fuel tank skid plate making contact with rear differential cover (noticed slight scuff mark – something to look at when cycling suspension)
  • Replace suspension bumper stops (they look like they are starting to fall apart – might be related to differential contact with other parts)
  • Check torque on all suspension related hardware (as a general reminder – we have been checking torque on various parts as we work on various things with this vehicle)

Routine maintenance notes/reminders

  • At each fuel stop: check engine oil and windshield washer oil
  • Monthly: check tire pressure, wear, and damage
  • Engine oil/filter change: 208,000 miles or September 2025 (every 3,000 miles or 1 year)
    • This is going to be done much sooner this go round, as part of a more thorough engine cleaning/flush

  • Clean/replace engine air intake filter: 215,000 or September 2026 (every 10,000 miles or 2 years)
    • Requires use of special cleaning fluid and oil (should have enough left over from initial cleaning/oiling after purchase)
  • Replace spark plugs: 235,000 miles or September 2026 (every 30,000 miles or 2 years)
  • Replace spark plug wires: 255,000 miles or September 2028 (every 60,000 miles or 4 years)

  • Replace transfer case fluid: 235,000 miles or September 2026 (every 30,000 miles or 2 years)
  • Replace engine coolant: 235,000 miles or September 2026 (every 30,000 miles or 2 years)
  • Inspect drive belts, adjust as needed: 235,000 miles or September 20268 (every 30,000 miles or 2 years)
  • Lubricate steering linkage: ASAP (Every 3,000 miles or 1 year)
    • Added grease to all zerks in November 2024 “that were obvious” (need to document where all the greaseable parts are since its a little different than the stock configuration)
